About the Institute

The founding of IIT Kharagpur, an idea suggested by Mr. NR Sarkar, a member of Education in the Executive Council of the Viceroy, the very first IIT in India. On his recommendation to build more such institutes in other parts of the country, Delhi emerged as the fifth franchise to form the UK (one of the countries offering help to set up IITs).

On January 28, 1959, HRH Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh laid the foundation stone for the college at Hauz Khas and made its first entry in 1961. The college was officially inaugurated on 17 August 1961 by the then Minister Humayun Kabir. Scientific Research and Cultural Affairs.

The main campus of IIT Delhi is located in Hauz Khas, South Delhi, on approximately 325 acres of land. Sonipat and Jhajjar are its two satellite complexes. Famous monuments like Qutub Minar and Lotus Temple surround the main complex. Other public institutions such as ISI, NIFT, AIIMS, IIFT, JNU, and NCERT also surround the institute.

The student residential area is divided into two parts – one for boys hostels and the other for girls hostels. There are a total of 13 hostels, of which 11 are boys and two other girls.
